TVNZ.co.nz top story:

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating why a vehicle was travelling east on the westbound side of Auckland's north-western motorway last night, creating mayhem.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the massive pile up which killed one person.

The driver, who is in a critical condition in Auckland Hospital, is believed to be a man in his late-80s. A middle-aged Asian woman who was his front-seat passenger was killed when she was apparently run over.

Three others were injured after a car reportedly drove the wrong way down the motorway, smashing into six other cars.

The incident left debris scattered across the motorway.

The collision closed the westbound lane between Waterview and Te Atatu. Debris blocked all lanes and motorists were asked to avoid the area as police sought to avoid "collateral crashes" caused by distracted drivers.

The westbound motorway was closed from the Rosebank and Patiki Road interchanges, with motorway signs advising motorists to exit the motorway at Great North Road, Waterview.

Police are looking for any witnesses who saw a green four-door Mitsubishi Galant travelling on the wrong side of the road before the crash occurred at 8.37pm.

Sergeant Stu Kearns says anyone with information should contact the Waitemata Serious Crash Unit, which is investigating.
